“The sweet language” in the words of Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, and a última flor do Lácio, inculta e bela (the last flower of Latium, wild and beautiful) according to Brazilian writer Olavo Bilac, Portuguese is one of the major  world languages. A Romance tongue, descended from the Latin of the Roman Empire, it was exported globally through discoveries and conquests. Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, and Guiné-Bissau, and has over 250 million speakers worldwide.

Port wine, also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto, or simply port, is a fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. Established in 1756, the Douro region is the third oldest protected wine region in the world.

 

 


In Roman times Portugal was known as Lusitania, named after the Lusitani or Lusitanian people.
