Farsi, or Persian, is an Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It has approximately 110 million speakers in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and other countries which historically came under Persian influence. For centuries Persian has also been a prestigious cultural language in Central, South, and Western Asia and has had considerable influence on neighboring languages. Famous for its highly developed literary tradition, some of the classic works of Persian literature are the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi, works of Rumi (Molana), the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Divan of Hafiz and poems of Saadi.

Avicenna or Ibn Sīnā (c. 980-1037), was a Persian polymath who wrote hundreds of treatises on philosophy and medicine—but also astronomy, alchemy, geology, psychology, Islamic theology, logic, mathematics, physics, and poetry. He is regarded as the most influential thinker of the Islamic Golden Age. Avicenna’s native language was Farsi, but he wrote in Arabic.
